Genealogical Consulting

What is it?

I offer advice and guidance for when you are not quite sure how to proceed from where you currently are with your genealogical research. I can provide you with directions on how to proceed with organizing the family information you have gathered to date, crafting a research plan, and formulating the next step in your research. This can take the form of a casual conversation over the phone or in person over a cup of coffee.

How much does it cost?

Consultation is charged on an hourly basis and starts with a retainer for a minimum of 10 hours, much like an attorney.
Time is charged for emails, phone conversations, drive time and consultation.

Research

What is it?

Research of sources in online databases (such as Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org) or textual records searches at local, state and federal repositories. For a summary of the approach used, click here.

How much does it cost?

Each research project is different. The minimum package is 10 hours. For more information on services and fees, click here to see a sample client package.

Document or Record Retrieval

Do you already know where the document or record you need resides? Or do you have an idea of the kind of document or record you are looking for, but don’t know how to access it? Navigating agencies and repositories that hold the information needed can be daunting.

What is it?

I assist you with navigating the bureaucratic maze to retrieve documents such as court records, vital records (such as birth, marriage, and death), newspaper articles, land records, and more.  For a list of repositories and archives to which I have access, click here. If you don’t see the repository on the list, just ask. I may be able to accommodate you.

How much does it cost?

Records retrieval usually includes fees for records searches, mileage to and from the repository, and a minimum 5 hours of consulting time.

Family Records Collection Analysis

Family data comes in many forms; bible records, vital records, land records, maps, family trees, family stories, family genealogies and so much more. The plethora of data accumulated can become overwhelming very quickly.

What is it?

I can analyze the collection you have and recommend ways to organize it into a filing system that allows you to clearly see what you have at a glance and efficiently access that information via indexes and finding aids.

How much does it cost?

Family Records Collection Analysis is conducted for an hourly fee plus any additional fees incurred for supplies, travel or incidentals. For more information on Services and Fees, click here to see a sample Client Contract Package.

Forensic Genealogy

What is it?

Forensic genealogy is simply the application of genealogical methods toward legal matters. Some examples include cases involving estate probates or heirships, land transactions, dual citizenship applications, crime, repatriation of remains, identifying unclaimed remains and many more. Reports are usually much briefer and contain less historical and cultural context unless it is crucial to the outcome.
